The Phillis Jacket is named after Phillis Wheatley, the first African-American author of a published book of poetry. Phillis was enslaved by the Wheatley family in Boston at the age of seven. After she learned to read and write, the Wheatley's encouraged her poetry when they saw her talent. On a trip to London in 1773, she was able to publish her work poems on various subjects, Religious and Moral. This brought her fame from both England and the American colonies. Figures such as George Washington praised her work!
